Real Madrid adds to its dismal Bernabéu cup final results

Real Madrid's defeat at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium against Atlético de Madrid (1-2) saw it extend its dismal run of results in cup finals played on its home turf. It has lost seven out of nine matches, and its latest defeat puts an end to 44 unbeaten home games.Social Media for Business here

Atlético de Madrid shattered Real's superb unbeaten run at home. A total of 44 games had come and gone without defeat in all competitions: La Liga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey. The last one was also a cup game, on 18th January, 2012 against Barcelona, which also ended with Madrid losing 1-2.

Real Madrid played and lost another final at the Santiago Bernabéu, eleven years on since Deportivo de La Coruña put a black mark in the Madrid history books on the day of the 'Centenariazo' -6th March, 2002-, when goals by Sergio and Diego Tristán obliterated Real Madrid's celebrations of its 100th anniversary.

This time its executioner was an Atlético de Madrid side which had gone almost 14 years without beating its archrival, securing the trophy with a goal by Miranda in extra time and leaving Madrid's season a trophy-less washout.

The defeat marks the seventh time that Real Madrid has lost a Copa del Rey final in the nine times that it has been played at the Santiago Bernabéu. It has only managed to win two: against Sevilla in 1962 (2-1) and against Castilla in 1980 (6-1).

Its seven defeats make it the team which has lost the most finals at its own stadium. Interestingly, on four of those occasions Atlético de Madrid was its executioner, winning the title at the stadium which stands on Madrid's Paseo de la Castellana in 1960, 1961, 1992 and 2013.

The 'Rojiblancos' lived up to their past achievements, having never lost a final at the Santiago Bernabéu against Real Madrid. They won on the previous three occasions and added another to their tally yesterday. They did so by putting an end to Real Madrid's run of ten consecutive triumphs in official Madrid derbies and 25 consecutive games undefeated against its neighbour.

Real Madrid has lost more Copa del Rey finals in its history than it has won. Out of the 38 which it has played, it has won on 18 occasions and let the trophy slip through its fingers 20 times.Social Media for Business here
