Real Madrid lets City off the hook

Real Madrid sealed qualification to the last 16 of the Champions League after drawing (1-1) with Manchester City. Mourinho's men played their best thirty minutes of the season, tarnished by a disastrous second half.

Madrid started well, helped by City's defensive frailties. Mancini chose to field three centre-backs, but they were unable to stop the Madrid onslaught, led by an outstanding Benzema, who worked hard for the team all night.

The Frenchman opened the scoring after making the most of Di María's cross. It was in the 10th minute and City was showing no signs of coping with what was still to come. Real played its best football of the night after the goal, playing dynamically and combining well, something unusual under Mourinho. Only Cristiano's selfishness prevented even higher praise for Real Madrid's first-half performance.

Mancini reacted in the second half bringing on Javi García in midfield. Silva, City's best player on the night, gave Pepe the runaround with his ingenuity and skill. On one of his runs, Silva found Agüero, who was tripped from behind in the area by Arbeloa. The referee pointed to the penalty spot and Agüero fired in the equaliser.
